DAY 1

What AEO Actually Means for Your Business

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your digital presence so AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot — cite your brand as the answer, instead of just listing your page as a link. Your buyers are already asking AI "what's the best tool for X." AEO determines whether the answer is you or a competitor.

The core shift from SEO: you're no longer optimizing for a ranked list of links a human scans. You're optimizing for a single synthesized answer a model decides to include — or not. That means entity authority (being a well-defined, consistently-described "thing" the AI recognizes) matters as much as keywords ever did.

Today's task: Read the Definitive Guide to AEO and identify the one AI engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews) your buyers are most likely to use — that's where you'll focus first.
DAY 2

The Two Pipelines: Retrieval vs. Training

Every AI citation comes from one of two pipelines. Retrieval is a live web search happening the moment someone asks a question — fast to influence, weeks not months. Training is content baked into a model's weights during a scheduled crawl — slower to move, but more durable once it sticks.

Most AEO advice conflates the two. They reward different work: retrieval rewards clean technical SEO and crawlable, extractable content; training rewards being named consistently on other credible sites, not just your own.

Today's task: Read How Generative AI Actually Decides What to Cite and note which pipeline you're currently weakest in.
DAY 3

Schema Markup: The Technical Foundation

Schema markup is structured data embedded in your site's code that tells AI crawlers exactly what your business is, what it offers, and how its content is organized — without them having to infer it from prose. At minimum, that means Organization schema (who you are), FAQPage schema (direct question-answer pairs AI can lift verbatim), and Service or Product schema for what you sell.

This is also the single most mechanical, highest-leverage item on this list: unlike content or PR, it's a one-time technical fix that keeps paying off.

Today's task: Check whether your site's robots.txt explicitly allows AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) and that your homepage has Organization and FAQ schema. Run the free AEO Score Calculator to see exactly what's missing.
DAY 4

Entity Authority: How AI Learns to Trust You

An "entity" is a distinct, recognized thing — a person, company, or concept — that AI systems can identify consistently across the web. Entity authority is built through consistency (your name, description, and details matching everywhere you appear) and third-party corroboration (other credible sites mentioning and describing you the same way).

This is why directory listings, guest posts, press mentions, and Wikidata entries matter for AEO in a way they never did for pure SEO: a backlink says "here's a link," but a consistent third-party mention says "this is a known entity in this category" — which is closer to what a model is trying to learn.

Today's task: Check that your business name, description, and URL are worded identically across your website, LinkedIn page, and any directory listings you've created. Fix any that drifted.
DAY 5

Your First 30-Day AEO Action Plan

Priority order, based on effort-to-impact: (1) unblock AI crawlers in robots.txt — five minutes, unlocks everything else; (2) add Organization + FAQ schema to your homepage; (3) publish one 2,000+ word cornerstone piece that directly answers the questions your buyers ask AI; (4) add sources, statistics, and direct quotations to your existing pages — the single highest-measured-impact content change in peer-reviewed AEO research; (5) get named consistently on 3–5 third-party sites (directories, guest posts, partner mentions).

Retrieval-pipeline changes (crawler access, schema, technical SEO) can show up in AI answers within 4–8 weeks. Training-pipeline changes (entity authority, third-party mentions) take longer — months, not weeks — because they only surface once a model retrains on a fresh crawl. Do both, expect different timelines from each.

Today's task: Score your site with the AEO Score Calculator, then pick the single lowest-scoring item and fix it before you do anything else on this list.
